I can't find my glasses

For most of my life I have had the pleasure of near perfect eyesight… then I got older. I remember that first visit to the drug store and asking for reading glasses and tooth whitener for my ageing father!

Aside from a stubborn inclination to never wear glasses, frankly my near sight issues are bad enough for me not to be able to find the glasses anyway - particularly if they are under my nose!

My oldest son happens to have that same stubborn streak and my wife and I could not help but feel terribly guilty when we found out he had bad eyesight around the age of ten!

Sitting at the dinner table one evening, Matt, my son shared with us that he had to take notes after a class by walking up to the blackboard and copying notes and why didn’t other kids do that? We then asked a few questions and found out the symptoms of poor eyesight had been plaguing him for years.

We went through the routine of getting eye tests (something which I have been procrastinating about for a while) and ordering glasses. Shortly after that we were driving on Hwy 2 on the way to Red Deer and were not sure whether to laugh or cry as Matt was in the back saying “Woah - trees, amazing!” and “Wow look at that cow, I have never seen those before!!”

Today Matt has routine eye tests and manages his deficiency while his Dad struggles with a denial issue relating to eyesight. Even writing this article I could have got into serious trouble as my computer auto corrected “procrastination” to “procreation”!!!

So, while I wait for medical advances to adjust my eyesight without using extremely cheap and boring readers (because I lose them all the time!) I will struggle with auto correct, proof reading and struggling in front of a room full of people giving a keynote. Heck, I even have to commit to memory, adjustments on my rifle in the army because I cannot see them!!

I have at least started to admit that the ageing health care products are for me and not in fact my Dad which is helping me overcome denial!
