Usually this is the time of year when many of us start to get cabin fever, being a little stir crazy from all the grey days and cold winds and sometimes even snow and ice. As a result, many people look to warmer climes to get a break and rejuvenate themselves until our sun returns in the spring. This year however, we seem to be the exception to the trend of extreme cold and punishing winter storms, so the idea of a winter getaway is not as urgent for some. Nonetheless, Martin and I have decided to make the most of our impending trip to Jamaica, and we are enjoying the build-up.
We start packing months ahead - I set aside summer favourites to wear to dinner at the resort, Martin got a new scuba mask and we have picked up sunscreen and lip balm and all the necessary tropical accessories bit by bit so we can talk about how we'll be using them when we finally get to Jamaica.
Last weekend we had a Jamaican dinner with friends - complete with Bob Marley tunes, rum cocktails, pepperpot shrimp, jerk chicken, flambéed bananas and the heat turned up. It was fantastic. The food was fun too :) You can get some of the recipes from my blog if you like. Even if you are not planning a winter holiday, I recommend this activity. It's a great way to enjoy a virtual break from the cold hard world and bask in a bit of decadence. After all, everyone needs some time to just enjoy life without worrying about getting the laundry done or paying the bills.
Full disclosure: I have to admit that vanity plays a significant part in my preparations for a beach holiday. Regular readers know that I have a fondness for all manner of food and drink, especially decadent desserts. To be able to consume all these goodies on a regular basis (even if I claim it's for research) requires that I work out regularly as well so I can still fit into my clothes. When those clothes are a bikini, well, let's just say there is less to forgive. I have kicked up my "Insanity" workouts to full octane level, something that ordinarily might not last long (these workouts really are crazy!). But all I have to think of is that gorgeous beach and I can keep at it.
I don't know if you are planning a winter holiday. Perhaps you're a skier and your winter paradise is swooshing down the powder slopes and relaxing in the hot tub. Whatever your escape, I wish that you can make time to feel a little spoiled, like maybe you've won the lottery. Just remember to take photos so you can prove it was real :)
