Start a neighbourhood garden, paint a mural, or host a cooking class in your neighbourhood! With the help of the Strong Neighbourhood’s Youth Development & Engagement Grant program, youth can get together to bring their idea to better their community.
This matching grant of up to $1,000 is designed to empower youth (aged 13-19) to shape their neighbourhoods into better places to live and play. This provides the opportunity for youth to build relationships, gain a greater sense of neighbourhood pride, and take a leadership role in planning and implementing community based projects. Applications for a 2019 project are due by end of day Sunday, Jan. 20.
In 2018, Kelowna Senior Secondary students developed the “Free Little Pantry” initiative and worked with neighbours to build and stock pantry with food and toiletry items for the Kelowna Women’s Shelter. “I found this project very rewarding, as the little pantry we built and donated to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter will help support the women and children in need,” said Alyssa Macfarlane, Youth Development & Engagement Grant recipient. “From building the pantry to people donating supplies, it was great to see everyone come together to make the Free Little Pantry project a success.”
The Youth Development and Engagement Grant is funded through the City’s Strong Neighbourhoods program. The program provides financial support, mentorship and guidance for youth to develop and implement projects that contribute to their neighbourhood’s vitality.
