Rooftop campout for firefighters

Big White firefighters are camping out on a rooftop to support people with muscular dystrophy.

Six firefighters will brave the elements for three days, March 13-15 in the Big White village in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Be sure to stop by the Kids Centre, where the firefighters will be camping out, and say hello.

There will lots of fun activities. Come by for a tug of war, barbecue and hot chocolate. Or test your skills and try throwing a snowball at a firefighter for a donation; the bigger the donation, the bigger the snowball you get to throw. Sparky the Fire Dog will be there for photos with children.

Muscular dystrophy is the name for a group of genetic disorders called “neuromuscular disorders” that are characterized by progressive weakness of the body’s muscles. Some people with muscular dystrophy may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately breathe. For some it is fatal and there is currently no cure.

Firefighters have been partnered with Muscular Dystrophy Canada for more than 60 years. They are the organization’s strongest and longest-standing supporters, and raise approximately $3 million for Muscular Dystrophy Canada every year across the country in events like the rooftop campout.

The money raised will help people affected by muscular dystrophy by purchasing essential medical and mobility equipment, provide support services, and fund leading research towards a cure.
