Locals raise cash for cancer

The Cyclepath Cyclotrons are heading down to Vancouver for the 2014 Silver Wheaton Ride to Conquer Cancer this weekend.

The Kelowna team of 30 riders, has raised over $94,000, close to their target of $100,000, to help support leading research at the BC Cancer Agency.

Garry Norkum of Cyclepath, says the team has had great support from local businesses who have donated to the fundraising effort.

"We're currently in 16th place with money raised and would really like to have exceeded $100,000 this year but we had a few team members drop out for various reasons. We've almost surpassed $400,000 over the five years we've been participating."

The money raised has a direct impact on the Okanagan since the funds raised are directed to the Kelowna Cancer Centre.

The Cyclotrons, who have been sponsored for the past five years by Cyclepath, are the largest team participating in the event from B.C's Interior, however there are a number of other teams from the area participating.

Approximately 3,000 riders will leave the Lower Mainland and travel as far as Mount Vernon in Washington State the first day, where they overnight and then continue to Seattle on day two.

This year the organizers have provided more options to riders with the choice of cycling back to Vancouver on day two or continuing on to Seattle. Riders can also choose to ride either 120 kms per day or the "Challenge" route of 160 kms.

Norkum says most of the teams have spent the past few months training for the this ride.

"Most team members have put in a number of 90+ km training rides over the past month."

The Cyclepath Cyclotrons have until August to collect donations for this year's ride. Riders have to raise a minimum of $2500 each to participate.  If you would like to contribute please visit their website:
