The incumbent MP for the Southern Interior has been re-elected.
Alex Atamanenko beat out Conservative Rob Zandee in Tuesday night’s federal election with 47.9 per cent of the riding’s vote.
“Obviously I’m happy that I won. I think the campaigning went very well. A lot of people worked very hard, we had offices in six communities and I managed to get out to most communities and talk to people so I think we ran a good campaign,” says Atamanenko.
He says he has a stack of post-election material to go through.
“Basically I’ll be getting myself and my staff back into operation mode after a little bit of a rest. We’ve got to take down the campaign offices and get back to work serving the people of the riding.”
In the Southern Interior riding, which includes the towns of Keremeos, Oliver and Osoyoos as well as Grand Forks, Nelson and Castlegar, Atamanenko with the NDP got 21,507 votes, Rob Zandee with the Conservatives came in second with 15,864.
Andy Morel of the Green Party finished with 4,381 votes and Liberal Brenda Jagpal took 3,097 votes.
Just over 61 per cent of eligible voters in the riding cast their ballots.
