Cabott takes stand against gravel pit

The issue of gravel pits in Joe Rich has seeped into the federal election campaign.

Kelowna-Lake Country Liberal candidate, Diana Cabott, has taken a stand against gravel pits in the Joe Rich area.

"This is a dangerous situation and it has taken the community by surprise," says Cabott at a Tuesday night public meeting.

"No community consultation was done on this. In fact, the concerns of the Rate Payers Association, School District 23 and the Black Mountain Irrigation District were ignored."

Cabott says environmental concerns and public safety issues have all been ignored.

Residents are upset about a proposed gravel pit in the Goudie Road area just off Highway 33 as well as a pit that recently began operation on Three Forks Road.

"I will take up this issue when elected MP. The community needs leadership and it needs a voice. I will be that voice."

She adds the protection of our water is one of the most important duties of a public official.

"The concerns put forth on the gravel pit expansion and its impact on the water supply for this area have not been heard and have not been given due process and this is wrong."

Conservative MP, Ron Cannan and Kelowna-Lake Country MLA, Al Horning were also in attendance at the meeting.

Update: MP Ron Cannan says as of 11 a.m. Wednesday the gravel pit at Three Forks Road has been shut down until further notice by the Ministry of Environment for health and safety reasons.
