Federal Election 2015

George: seeking balance

Castanet is featuring profiles on all the Okanagan candidates in the upcoming federal election.

Chris George, Green - North Okanagan-Shuswap

Chris George wants to bring balance to Ottawa.

The Green candidate for the North Okanagan-Shuswap federal riding says balance is a core principle of the Green Party.

“Balance in Parliament means integrating the needs of the economy, the environment and the people in our riding. It may be more familiar as the triple bottom line statement: people, planet, profit,” said George. “We can't neglect one in favour of the others. We need to balance all three to have healthy and sustainable communities. “

George believes cultivating a balanced perspective allows an MP to fairly represent the diverse political viewpoints of the people who live in the riding.

He has lived and worked in the Vernon, Enderby and Salmon Arm areas and has personal knowledge and networks in nearly all communities of the Okanagan-Shuswap.

He lives with his wife, Samara, and their children on a small holding in Notch Hill near Salmon Arm, where they tend gardens, geese, ducks, sheep, chickens and their community.

George said he “considers serving his community to be an obligation and duty.”

He is past-president of the Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts (now Arts Council of the South Shuswap) and a longtime volunteer with Sorrento Centre Community Garden. He ran in the 2013 provincial election for the BC Greens in the Shuswap. He also contested for the chair of Area C in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District in a 2012 byelection.

Upon hearing the federal Green Party candidate for North Okanagan Shuswap had stepped down, George submitted his name to stand as the new candidate and was elected on July 23.

After a 25-year career in small business, he is entering the fourth year of an online general studies degree program at Thompson Rivers University.

George holds certificates in public speaking and sales management from the Dale Carnegie Training organization, and is a member of Toastmasters. He has also held various positions in small businesses.
