Former Artistic Director Returns

Sunshine Theatre Company is thrilled to announce that the company's very popular former Artistic Director, Lawrie Seligman, will be returning to Kelowna next season. Mr. Seligman will rejoin Sunshine Theatre to direct the Pulitzer Prize (and Tony award) winning play PROOF by David Auburn.

Lawrie Seligman is well known to Kelowna audiences as the man who almost single-handedly kept Sunshine Theatre together for three years and turned a crippling deficit into a surplus. He had few chances to direct productions while he was here, but his legacy to the company was the capacity to begin local production again. Mr. Seligman now directs Cultural Programs for the City of Spruce Grove, and programs that city's performance facility, Horizon Stage.

"Lawrie Seligman is a wonderful director, as well as a friend and colleague of mine for many years," says Sunshine Artistic Director David Mann. "I was hoping from the first moment I took the job here that I would be able to bring him back for a return visit. I think PROOF is the perfect vehicle for him - a very recent play in the tradition of classic American drama a play that presents great challenges to the artists and audience, but also offers great rewards as well."

PROOF also allows Sunshine's Artistic Director the opportunity to take on a significant acting role for the company. A theatre veteran with close to 100 professional productions behind him, David Mann will take on the part of Robert, a brilliant mathematician who has lost most of his career to debilitating mental problems. "It's a great role and a great play," says Lawrie Seligman, "Kind of a cross between RAIN MAN and A BEAUTIFUL MIND."

PROOF plays February 3 - 12 in Kelowna and February 15 - 16 in Vernon. It is part of the 2004/2005 season recently announced by Sunshine Theatre. Early Bird subscription rates are available from Communitix until June 30.
