Iconic singer/songwriter/pianist RAY CHARLES died yesterday at the age of 73 from complications from liver disease. According to a statement from Charles' publicist, he died at his Beverly Hills home, surrounded by family and friends.

Charles had been suffering from health concerns for some time. Last year, he had to cancel most of his tour because of hip problems. He underwent hip replacement surgery, but while he was being treated, he was diagnosed with other ailments.

As we previously reported, MARIAH CAREY is currently working on a children's book about a bi-racial orphan. Now, MTV Online reports that the book will actually be the first of several books in a series called Automatic Princess -- the same name Mariah uses for her line of fashion accessories.

Variety reports Mattel has obtained the rights to create an American Idol-themed Barbie doll. American Idol Barbie will arrive in stores next winter and will come with assorted stage accessories. Idol judge PAULA ABDUL says Idol& Barbie has a, quote, "refreshing" quality.

ABC this month is debuting its "Micro-Mini Series," four short films set to air during the network's Monday night comedy block. The three-minute interstitials, slated for June 28 and July 12 and 19, include "Not Now, Kitty," about a cat who becomes a woman, "I Didn't Really Wet My Pants," about a blind date gone horribly wrong, & "Mosquito Cupid," an offbeat love story featuring a matchmaking mosquito.
