Andrew Garfield had to "fight for freedom" while working on The Amazing Spider-Man films.

The actor became a household name when he was cast as the superhero, also known as Peter Parker, following on from Tobey Maguire's portrayal.

He played the superhero in two movies in 2012 and 2014 but a third installment never came to fruition and the character is now being playing by Tom Holland in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

While Andrew found the films an exciting opportunity, he admits he also felt confined within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and would often get reprimanded for saying something out of line.

"I have so many different perspectives on that moment. I was really excited to be Spider-Man," he told Mr. Porter. "I had a real hope that it would be something that young people could connect with, that wasn't just about commodifying everything. But I had to fight a lot for my freedom within that. And I'd often get in trouble as I'd say things I wasn't supposed to."

During the interview, he also revealed during the Spider-Man years he was offered the "opportunity to glorify myself" but turned them down. He wouldn't even specify what those offers were because that would also be a way of promoting himself.

The 33-year-old shot to fame thanks to the movie and his relationship with co-star Emma Stone, which ended last year (15), and the spotlight isn't a side of the job he is thrilled about.

Asked how he dealt with the fame, he replied, "You just need to go home and be with friends, be with family. But I'm still learning, to be honest. I love being an actor, but I'm not crazy about celebrity culture."

Andrew is currently starring in the Mel Gibson-directed war movie Hacksaw Ridge.
