Kiefer Sutherland gave up riding motorcycles after a police officer remarked his bike seemed to be too big for him.

The 24 star really enjoyed taking long-distance trips on his motorcycles, but he admits he is not good at riding.

"I was riding a motorcycle in San Francisco and the cop pulled up next to me, looked over and said, 'Looks like that bike's riding you,' and I thought, 'I should probably get rid of this,' and I did," he tells People magazine's Jess Cagle.

However, one thing the 49-year-old is adamant he won't give up is alcohol - despite all the trouble it has caused him.

Back in 2007 The Lost Boys star was arrested for driving under the influence, which landed him a 48-day prison sentence.

In more recent years, his hellraising antics have led to him attacking a Christmas tree in a London hotel, while being caught more than a little merry on camera.

"One of the things I love to do is go out with my friends and tell stories and have a bunch of drinks," he said. "Having said that, I can also look back on my life and tell you very squarely that the only bad things that have ever happened to me in my life have been because I like to go to bars and have drinks with my friends. (I) enjoy those moments with friends, despite the possibility of consequences."

Kiefer admitted he has had a strange relationship with alcohol, but sobriety is not for him.

"I would be lying if I told you that there weren't moments where I felt I let it get away from me," he confessed. "So it's kind of been a push and pull through my life. (But) I was never the guy, if something was wrong in my life or something wasn't right, I didn't go drown my sorrows."

"I have, at times, for stretches of time (quit drinking)," he added. "But at some point, I've made a decision, right or wrong, for myself that I would rather work really hard so I could still have some of those times. Than to simply stop. That's a choice I've made and I live with that choice."
