OSO wraps up season

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra (OSO) will close the season with an evening of celebration and enthusiasm with two guest pianists, three guest vocalists, 100 member OSO Chorus and 80 member OSYO chorus all joining the OSO professional musicians on stage.

The concert opens in Kelowna on Friday, May 6 with additional performances in Penticton Saturday, May 7and Vernon on Sunday, May 8. Tickets are $52.50 for adults; $45.50 for seniors and $24.50 for youth and are available for the Kelowna concerts by phone through Kelowna Tickets at 250.862.2867, Penticton through ValleyFirst Tix 877.763.2849, and the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre phone 250.549.7469 or online via www.okanagansymphony.com.

“Our piano duo features Marcel Bergmann’s Concerto for Two Pianos; Marcel will perform this with award winning pianist James Parker;  combine forces with the OSO, massed chorus, and exceptional soloists in the vivid and powerful Carmina Burana by Carl Orff and we have an evening that all will surely enjoy,” notes Thomson.  “The 12th Century poetry explores themes of nature, love and fate - inspiring music that is exhilarating, driving, and unforgettable.  Opening with the famous “O Fortuna”, primal rhythms and raw earthy texts drive this choral and orchestral tour de force through the gamut of emotions, making it one of the greatest of all compositions and a spectacular close to our season.”

The final concert of the season also marks the retirement of Denis Letourneau who is stepping down as Concert Master with the OSO after 39 seasons.  Denis is a prominent teacher and chamber musician throughout the Okanagan valley in addition to his work with the OSO. He was a founding member of the Kelowna Community Music School.

“Denis has contributed to the orchestra and the culture of al life in the valley; it has always been a dream for Denis  to perform with his son Nathan who is a tenor, so I have invited Nathan to be one of the soloists for Carmina Burana,” comments Thomson. “In addition, Denis and Nathan will perform a solo/duet piece by Rachmaninov together accompanied by the OSO as part of our season finale.”
