Freaky for freekeh

Freekeh, also know as farik or frikeh, is young green wheat which has been toasted and cracked. Although it has been around for as long as other grains like quinoa and teff, freekeh is now gaining popularity as a modern day superfood.

Here are a few of the top reasons to give freekeh a try:

1.  The fiber train!

Freekeh is a grain that is incredibly high in fiber. Why is that good news? Fiber helps us feel full, for longer. This is a great aid when trying to shed a few extra pounds. There is actually four times the amount of fiber found in freekeh when compared to brown rice.

2.  Good for the gut!

We always seem to be hearing about probiotics but what about prebiotics? Well that’s a lovely nutrient that happens to be found in freekeh, which helps fuel the growth of good bacteria. An important ingredient for happy bowel health and immune function.

3.  Plant protein powerhouse!

This ancient grain is a great source of plant protein. In comparison to other protein providers in the grain family like quinoa, brown rice and farro, freekeh rates the highest when it comes to protein. It also ranks lowest on the calories, which can also help with weight management.

Not to mention, freekeh is also a loaded with calcium, iron and zinc.  Minerals we can benefit from at any age.

Food for thought - If you can make it with rice, you can make it with freekeh so don’t be scared to try it!
