The Coquihalla is now open

9 a.m. update: Highway 5 Both directions Limited Visibility with Heavy Snowfall from Exit 202, Portia Interchange to Merritt is now clear. 


5:57a.m. update: Highway 5 Both directions reopened at 4 a.m. after being closed for almost 12 hours due to a vehicle incident and heavy snow.

A viewer sent us this raw video from their travel on the Coquihalla Monday morning.

7:15 p.m. update: Highway 5 closed in both directions from Exit 202, Portia Interchange to Merritt (88.3 km) because of limited visibility with heavy snowfall. Estimated time of opening is between Midnight and 4 a.m. Next update at 11 p.m.


5:30 p.m. update:  Highway 5 is closed in both directions from Exit 202, Portia Interchange to Exit 336, Junction with Highway 97D, to Logan Lake (135.4 km) because of Limited Visibility with Heavy Snowfall.


5 p.m. update: Highway 5 is closed northbound at Great Bear Snowshed because of vehicle incident. Assessment in progress. Next update at 6:00 pm.


2 p.m. update: Road reopened at Merritt. Updated on Mon Apr 29 at 2:00 pm PDT


1:10 p.m. update: Heavy Snowfall from Exit 202, Portia Interchange to Exit 256, Kingsvale (Coldwater Road) is now clear. Updated on Mon Apr 29 at 1:07 pm PDT.


Noon update: Highway 5 Southbound
Closed at Merritt because of Vehicle Incident. No detour in effect. Estimated time of opening 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Next update by 12:30 p.m. Updated on Mon Apr 29 at 11:27 a.m.

11 a.m.: Highway 5 Southbound
Closed at Coquihalla Summit (1244 metres) because of vehicle incident. No detour available. Estimated time of opening currently not available; assessment in progress. Next update by 11:30 a.m. 


10 a.m.update: Highway 5 Both directions
Travel Advisory in effect due to heavy snowfall from Exit 202, Portia Interchange to Exit 256, Kingsvale (Coldwater Road) (54.8 km). Travel is not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Please use alternate routes if possible. 


7:45 a.m. update: Hwy. 97C, the Okanagan Connector, is being hit by a whiteout. Drivers are reporting bleak conditions form Kelowna to Merritt.


6 a.m.: Heavy snow forced the Coquihalla to be closed close from Hope to Merritt early this morning. The highway was shutdown just after midnight until 3 a.m.

A travel alert did go out, warning drivers of the impending snowfall, at 7 p.m., the alert is still in place.
