Saw horse blocks highway

An Okanagan motorist has a word of warning after nearly colliding with a saw horse in the middle of the highway last night.

Vernon resident Brad Lewicky was on his way home from work in Kelowna around 9 p.m., when he found the saw horse, standing up in the locked position, in the middle of Highway 97.

“I was in the slow lane and I looked up and thought “What the heck is this?”, it was really shiny and looked like an object right in the middle of the fast lane,” says Lewicky.

“I saw what it was and immediately pulled over, put my hazards on and reversed down the road as there was no one behind me. I got to it and realized it was a fully erect, maybe four or five feet tall, saw horse step ladder.”

Lewicky only drives a small Acura but knew he needed to clear it from the road for safety reasons, so he did his best to fold it up and stick it in his trunk.

“You know three cars ahead of me blew past this thing like they didn't even see it,” says Lewicky. “I mean it is shaped like a door wedge, if any small car would have hit it head on, it would have collapsed and put it straight through the window.”

He feels that perhaps it fell out of a truck and wasn't tied down properly or something along those lines. He doesn't feel it was malicious but is concerned the driver didn't notice they had lost it off their truck.

“You think they would have heard something, a clunk or smash. It is a fairly heavy piece of aluminum. It is not plastic that would just pick up and fall off,” says Lewicky.

“Tie your crap down, please. It could have gone through a windshield and caused a huge accident. Or gone under a car causing the person to lose control. It could have been a really bad situation.”

The saw horse was on Hwy. 97 northbound right before the Predator Ridge turn off. Lewicky feels that if a car had struck the metal stand, it could have been serious.
