Due to extremely dry conditions the Giants Head Freeride Longboard competition will be cancelled.
The District of Summerland issued a statement Monday claiming the risk of wildfire on Giant’s Head Mountain was too great and the competition that was to be held July 28 thru to August 4 must be called off.
Staff assessed the situation and felt this was in the best interest of public and property safety. The Giant’s Head Mountain Park Road has been closed to vehicle traffic since July 18, to limit the risk of person-cause fires.
Fire Chief Glenn Noble advised, “It was a difficult decision but the safety of our citizens and attendees at the event must take a priority”.
Optional dates were given but it is uncertain if the Longboard Competition will be able to reschedule.
