3 dead, 3 hurt in crash

UPDATE 9:40 A.M. - RCMP have released some details surrounding a three vehicle crash which killed three people on Highway 97 adjacent to Duck Lake Tuesday afternoon.

Police, citing witnesses, say a northbound Chevrolet Malibu crossed the oncoming traffic impacting the front passenger's side of a southbound Kia Forte. The Chevy then collided head-on with a 5-ton commercial truck.

The three occupants of the Malibu, an 82-year-old man, 79-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, died at the scene.

The driver of the truck and two occupants of the Kia were taken to Kelowna General Hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

No names have been released.

Police are continuing to analyse data taken at the scene.

RCMP are seeking further witnesses to this tragic crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cst Schneider at 250-980-5353.

UPDATE 9:00 P.M. 

Hwy. 97 has partially reopened after a tragic accident claimed three lives early Tuesday evening. DriveBC reports that lane closures are still in effect. 


UPDATE 7:30 P.M.

RCMP confirm three people were killed in a serious crash Tuesday evening. 

Cst. Kris Clark says three vehicles were involved and there are several others occupants with unknown injuries. 

Hwy. 97 remains closed in both directions while police investigate the crash. 


UPDATE 5:35 P.M.:

RCMP have closed Highway 97 in both directions following a serious crash Tuesday evening.

Cst. Kris Clark says traffic is being diverted at Airport Road and Beaver Lake Road.

“Police anticipate the highway will be closed for several hours as the causal factors into the crash are investigated. We are recommending motorists avoid the area and find an alternate route.”


A serious crash has claimed at least one life on Highway 97 near the Kelowna airport.

Witnesses say three vehicles were involved in the crash around 4:40 Tuesday afternoon and traffic is moving very slowly between YLW and Duck Lake. Southbound traffic has come to a standstill, but northbound is moving.

There are reports that the jaws of life have been called, and first responders from both Kelowna and Lake Country converged on the scene.

As many as five people are believed to have been injured in the crash.
