Collision in Peachland

UPDATED 11:25 A.M.

Reports are coming in that traffic on the highway is moving again and that the accident has been cleared.

A head-on collision has closed Highway 97 in Peachland and sent several people, including a toddler, to hospital.

Two cars smashed into each other and a third was also damaged in the crash.

According to witnesses, the crash occurred between Trepanier Bench Road and Todd Road, right near the bridge.

"Between the smashed cars and the rescue vehicles, the highway is effectively closed," said one man.

"The driver of the red car, pretty sure it was a female, they had to cut her out with the jaws of life," he said. "You could hear her moaning and crying as they extricated her."

A three-year-old child was also in one of the vehicles and had blood on its face as it was removed from the wreck. The child's injuries are unknown.

Northbound drivers are taking Beach Avenue to avoid the incident, there is not an easy detour for southbound traffic, he said.

DriveBC estimates the highway will reopen by 11:30 a.m.
