Home destroyed by fire

An Okanagan couple has lost everything after their home was destroyed by a fire early Sunday morning off Westside Road.

North Westside Fire Rescue was called to the scene shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday and arrived to a fully engulfed home on Attenborough Road near Killiney Beach.

Fire Chief Doug Gardiner says the homeowners were not able to call for help for over an hour.

They had no phone service because power was cut and they were attempting to fight the fire themselves.

“By the time we got there it was fully engulfed, the roof was already collapsed and so we protected all the exposures and knocked the rest of the fire down,” said Gardiner. “There is nothing left, just two stucco walls, the same two walls that were standing when we got there.”

He says 9-1-1 was finally called when one of the homeowners ended up walking a long way to a place where she could make a 9-1-1 call.

No one was injured and there is nothing suspicious about the fire.

Gardiner says the cause of the fire is currently unknown, an insurance adjuster was on the scene today and fire investigators will be looking into it.

“It was so far gone I really couldn't make a determination as to what it was because really there was nothing left,” said Gardiner.
