Okanagan roads reopen

6:30 p.m. Update: We are getting reports that most roads in the region are now open after today's snow and freezing rain made many of them sheets of ice. The conditions caused multiple accidents.

UPDATE 4:30 P.M.

Hudson Road in West Kelowna has reopened. 

Multiple roads remain closed around the Okanagan including Dehart, Bedford, Casorso, Spiers, Chute Lake, and Lakeshore in Kelowna. 

As well Boucherie (pictured below) and Anders remain closed in West Kelowna.

UPDATE 4:00 P.M 

Gordon Drive has reopened after the city bus that slid into a vehicle was moved out of the way. 

Closures remain on Dehart, Bedford, Casorso, Spiers, Chute Lake, and Lakeshore in Kelowna. 

Hudson, Boucherie and Anders are also still closed in West Kelowna. 

Hwy.97 between Kelowna and Vernon was also a danger spot as three accidents happened within 15-minutes. 


UPDATE 3:30 P.M.

Swamp Road has just reopened as city crews have sanded that stretch of road. 


UPDATE 3:15 P.M. 

In Kelowna the following roads are closed because of unsafe conditions; Dehart, Bedford, Casorso, Spiers, Swamp, Chute Lake, Lakeshore.

Hudson, Boucherie and Anders are also closed in West Kelowna. 


UPDATE 2:49 P.M.

Some more closures in West Kelowna, Hudson Road from Hwy. 97 to Boucherie Road is closed.

As well as Anders Road from Boucherie to Thacker Drive is closed as well.

As for new Kelowna closures, Chute Lake Road and Lakeshore Drive has just closed.

McCulloch Road is down to a single lane in both directions as well.

UPDATE 2:28 p.m.

Spiers Road at K.L.O is closed until further notice, the hill is no longer safe to drive. 

Swamp Road at Kamloops Road is also closed because of unsafe conditions. 

Boucherie Road remains closed at this time. 

Kelowna RCMP are pleading with the public to slow down and be cautious as roads are covered in black ice. 

Kelowna RCMP as well as Lake Country RCMP have responded to multiple motor vehicle crashes over the last few hours involving vehicles that have lost control,  gone off road or collided with another vehicle.

Police are reminding motorists to be cautious and adjust their speed accordingly while driving on the roads as they are slippery during this time.

Sgt Morrison says that it is also important to have appropriate winter tires and equipment, including warm clothing.

"Slow down. Take some extra time and get to where you need to go, safely," adds Morrison.

The RCMP and the West Kelowna Fire department have closed off Boucherie Road from the junction with Hwy. 97 to the top of the hill.

The road was closed due to ice. Road crews have been called in to sand the route.

Drivers are asked to use caution and to leave room for stopping.
