30th annual memorial Larry Nicholas run

Next Sunday November 3 will mark the 30th annual cross-country run in memory of Larry Nicholas.
“He always had a smile,” says Cindy Rhodes, the race director of this year’s 30th Nicholas 9k cross-country race.
“I remember Larry as a young, active and friendly guy. He worked at the Parkinson Recreation Centre and liked to climb the brick walls even then!”
Larry Nicholas and his friend Dick Greenway, both from Kelowna, accompanied by their girlfriends, twin sisters Sheila and Diane, set out to climb the treacherous Snow Creek Wall in Leavenworth, Washington in 1983.
Larry and Dick had climbed this particular route the previous spring.
They were resting on a ledge, waiting for climbers above them to reach the next pitch. Dick was sitting down. Larry was standing on the corner of the ledge when the rocks crumbled out from beneath his feet. He fell immediately, as did Dick, who was roped to him.
They both fell 600-feet and neither survived more than a few minutes…that was May 21, 1983. Larry was a day shy of his 24th birthday. Dick was 26-years-old.
“He was athletic and would have been a motivator and inspiration to many,” his sister Linda says. “He could draw funny cartoons.”
In September 1983, Dennis Zahara, a co-worker of Larry, organized the first cross-country run and a year later the Kelowna Running Club integrated the memorial run in the Interior cross-country series.
The run is November 3 and starts at 10 a.m. in Mission Creek Park. The entry fee is $12.
Also this year there will be a Kid’s race for children 6 and under and up to 12 years of age. The kids will run a distance between 1 and 3 km.
There is a day of race registration. However, runners are asked to register through the website of the Kelowna Running Club www.kelownarunningclub.com
