After fifteen years of working tirelessly in civic politics as councilor for three terms and mayor for two terms, one thing you know about Sharon Shepherd is how deeply she cares for her community. What you may not know is how personally committed she is to supporting charitable organizations like the Kelowna Food Bank.
Not surprisingly, with her background in health care, Sharon is keenly aware and concerned over issues of child poverty, nutrition and the wellbeing of our youth.
“I think it is deplorable that we have such high child poverty (in our province) and I’m hoping that will change as we work towards developing initiatives that will help people. Child poverty is a huge issue in our community,” says Shepherd.
“I’ve been involved with the Community Action Team for Children’s Health (CATCH) almost since its inception and the 0 to 6 age group is a very important group that CATCH has paid attention to along with poverty that is so significant in our community.”
According to the recently released CATCH 2011 ‘State of the Child’ report for the Central Okanagan, the Low Income Measure (LIM), an indicator of relative poverty, showed child poverty in Kelowna at 22.2% in 2009. Between 2004 and 2010, the monthly food bill for a family of four in BC increased by 43.5% from $632.00 to $907.00. In 2011, the Kelowna Community Food Bank helped to feed nearly 40,000 people – 10,000 of those were children. In addition, they served approximately 100 babies and 20 pregnant mothers each month. The number of children between the ages of 0-6 who have accessed the Kelowna Community Food Bank has risen by 42.1% between 2007 and 2011.
Shepherd says, “I’ve always been interested and made sure that we were responsible in our commitment to the Food Bank. It is looking after the people in our own community and I think that is very important to do."
“The ‘No Hungry Children’ program targeting families with children, struck a special place for me, so I have committed to the monthly donation to assist with the funding that is required to help with those young families that have children and are in need.”
The World Health Organization states that nutrition is the foundation for health and development. Healthy children learn better, are stronger, more productive, and have a better chance of breaking cycles of poverty and realizing their full potential.
For a monthly commitment of just $35 you can help fill a tummy, fulfil a future and eliminate child hunger in Kelowna. All monies raised through No Hungry Children are used to support and grow the Kelowna Food Bank's three children's programs: Tiny Bundles, Vitality and Kids' Snack Pack. (For more information about No Hungry Children, go to the Kelowna Food Bank’s nohungrychildren.com website.)
Shepherd says, “I particularly liked the campaign when the program was introduced showing children dressed up reflecting different professions and I think it really is a great initiative. I’ve stayed with the program and encourage other people to think about it. It is an easy method to support the Food Bank, helping to meet the needs of children in our own community. Children are the future of our community and that is what we are investing in.”
In addition to ongoing initiatives like No Hungry Children that support families with children on a regular basis, the Cast A Light campaign also goes a long way toward helping the Kelowna Food Bank meet the needs of low income children, families and seniors during these challenging times.
“Christmas seems to be a time when we are out in the community asking people to get involved and people are always so generous,” say Shepherd. “I’m very proud of this city because people are working very hard without really expecting any recognition for the hard work they do and I know this community will step up again, this year, to support the Food Bank.”
