What child can resist a game of ‘Scavenger’? How many mothers have come to the difficult realization of their impoverished existence because of one?
Laura represents that large, quiet group of Kelowna Food Bank clients, ordinary people who need temporary help to get back on their feet. Her story is, unfortunately, a common one, and with the challenges of today’s economy, it has become even more common.
“I was young - newly divorced with three small children (I want to note here that their father was very much involved with their life just not keen on helping me with mine) and struggling to get on my feet,” Laura says. “One of our biggest challenges was FOOD and the lack thereof. I had found that a fun way to deal with this when food was particularly scarce was to have what I called, ‘Scavenger Night’ dinners. This would be met with screams of delight from the kids as it meant that they got to go through the cupboards to find whatever they wanted for dinner. For them it was hitting the jackpot. For me it was a way to disguise the fact that I had little to no food it the house."
“It was during one of our ‘Scavenger Nights’ that it really hit home for me that I needed help."
"My youngest son had made us pancakes for supper – glorious green pancakes. I’m not sure if you have ever tasted pancakes made from flour, cornstarch, salt and green food coloring but I can tell you it is a taste you will not soon forget. The fact that these pancakes represented the sum total of everything in my cupboards clearly told me that I needed to get some help.”
So Laura put her pride on the shelf and went to the Food Bank . "It meant no more green pancakes!” she says. “That first hamper was a Godsend. It happened to be a Christmas hamper and truly was such a blessing that year. The second hamper I got did not have the same effect. This time I found that I really didn’t need or even want some of the items,” she says guiltily.
“It was then that I realized the Food Bank wasn’t meant as a never-ending source of ‘free’ food so I didn’t have to shop anymore – it was NOT there to FIX everything for me – it was there to help me – to be a resource and a tool for me to use to get myself back on my feet without having to choke down green pancakes,” she says.
Laura did soon get back on her feet and never had to go back to the Food Bank again for assistance. She says that the experience even had a beneficial side effect of making her a smarter shopper. But she never forgot how valuable that first hamper was and the impact it had on her life.
“I began being able to drop my own food donations into the collection box at my grocery store,” says Laura. “Soon after that I was participating in different fund raising events for the Kelowna Food Bank."
“We are all affected every time someone – anyone – goes to the Food Bank for help. The ripple out into the community form their experience affects us all. The health, strength and spirit of community is made up from ALL its members. Just the simple act of giving hope to someone going through a hard time makes our community stronger, safer and healthier. Our Kelowna Food Bank has become so much more than just a place to get food. They have really become a BRIDGE between those in need and the resources that can help them."
“I would just like to say THANK YOU! It is because of people just like you that helped people just like me, when I needed it most that green pancakes is a thing of the past in our house, although to this day, ‘Scavenger Night’ remains the most requested dinner by my kids.”
