Who do you know that is the “Go-To” person? I don’t mean for getting things done, I mean that person who everyone goes to in times of trouble or times of change. This person isn’t necessarily someone of authority or power they are though greatly respected by all. In your workplace you may have experienced knowing a “Go-To” person.

The “Go-To” person seems to draw people like a magnet. Why is that? What is it about this person that separates them from the pack? Ok, let’s look at the qualities and attributes of this person. When you think of a “Go-To” person here might be some of the character qualities you’ll find.

  • Inner strength and confidence
  • Personal control in any situation
  • Are there for the greater good of all
  • Have put their egos aside
  • Are the best listeners in the room
  • See the bigger picture
  • Offer insights and alternative views
  • Ask powerful questions
  • Refrain from offering advice
  • Are genuinely curious
  • Have compassion and empathy
  • Have little time for self-pity
  • Won’t be found gossiping, ever
  • Are champions of others
  • They do not brag or boast
  • They are consistent and walk their talk

These are just a few of the character qualities of a “Go-To” person. What other traits can you think of? A big one in the workplace is never engaging in gossip. You’ll likely find your “Go-To” person will put a halt to a person’s gossiping and whining and have them direct their concerns and issues directly to the person whom they have an issue with. They might say “I so hear you and the how this is affecting you. I’m hearing what you don’t want, tell me what you do want and let’s map out a plan to make that happen.”

An overarching quality of a “Go-To” person seems to be one of who embodies “trust.” To you maybe this is a person in the clergy or a civil leader. Maybe this is someone who is helping people who are living on the streets. This person might be inside the company you work for. Either way you will likely find them demonstrating daily acts of kindness.

As you look at yourself in the workplace or with your friends do you see yourself as a “Go-To” person? What character qualities do you wish to work on? Character qualities are something we can intentionally develop. Becoming a “Go-To” person may take your life to a whole new level.
