11,000 without power in Quebec

About 800 Hydro Quebec employees are still hard at work trying to restore electricity to customers affected by a power outage on Friday.

The lights went out for 120-thousand customers when a storm dumped about 50-centimetres of snow in some areas.

As of 8 p.m. Monday night, about 11,600 customers were still without power, mainly in the Laurentians and the Outaouais region of western Quebec.

The Lanaudiere region north of Montreal was also heavily affected, but power has been largely restored in that area.

Hydro-Quebec spokeswoman Isabelle Nuckle says the weight of the snow caused several trees to sag onto power lines.

She says the work is taking longer than expected because many utility poles carrying the power lines need to be replaced.
