Canadian Sprinter Test Positive

  • Canadian sprinter Earle Connor – a multiple world-record holder – won't be competing at the 2004 Athens Paralympics after testing positive for two banned substances. Connor, 28, tested positive for trace amounts of testosterone and nandrolone in an out-of-competition test performed Aug. 23. Connor was one of Canada's top medal hopes in Athens. He is the world-record holder in the men's amputee 100, 200 and 400 metres, as well as the 60 metres indoors. He won gold in the 100 m and silver in the 200 m at 2000 Sydney Paralympics.
  • Manitoba officials began issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples on Thursday after a judge declared that the current definition of marriage is unconstitutional. The province is the fourth to legalize same-sex marriage, following Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
  • Prime Minister Paul Martin and Finance Minister Ralph Goodale say the federal government will still have enough money for cities, the environment and a national day care program, despite a $41-billion agreement on health care.
  • A memo tabled at the inquiry into the sponsorship scandal suggests that Chuck Guité was hand-picked to head the federal advertising program.
  • Prime Minister Paul Martin and the country's premiers signed a 10-year, $41-billion health deal early Thursday morning, promising better care for Canadians.
