E.T., call Canada

There's one things Canadians seem to be able to agree on - if we can't see it, it must be there.

At least as it pertains to creatures from outer space.

In a recent Angus Reid poll, 79 per cent of Canadians believed there was probably intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. Of those, 30 per cent said the statement was definitely true.

The poll results mirror those of other surveys conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.

It's also interesting to note the 'believability quotient' is steady across all age groups.

While most Canadians believe there is likely life elsewhere, we are more reserved when it comes to whether those beings have visited us.

Only 47 per cent believe we have, or probably have been visited. However, a slight majority (36 per cent to 35 per cent) believe we have definitely been visited opposed to those who say definitely not.

While E.T. and his relatives get a big thumbs up from Canadians, not so when it comes to things that go 'bump' in the night.

Only 30 per cent of Canadians believe in the possibility of ghosts, while only 36 per cent believe we can communicate with the dead.

Women are much more likely to believe in both than men, according to the poll.

What about closer to home?

Most Canadians call foul when the topic of the our own beloved Ogopogo or B.C.'s infamous Sasquatch are brought up.

More than 70 per cent of Canadians believe these creatures probably, or definitely, don't exist.

Don't tell that to the tourists who flock to our province hoping to spot either one.

While opinions are varied on different aspects of believing what we can't see, there is little debate over what can, and can't be explained.

Nearly 80 per cent of us believe there are things that happen on Earth that can't be explained by science.
