Struck by lightning

UPDATE: 3 p.m.

Another WestJet passenger has come forward with their own version of being 'struck by lightning'.

Jerry Lehoux says he was sitting near the front of the plane when it was hit.

“It sounded like a bomb going off, as well as bright light,” explains Lehoux.

“It was very dark outside then there was a loud bang and then a million watt light being turned on. The pilot said that the lightning hit the front of the plane on the cone and may have travelled along the left side.”

The plane turned around and landed safely in Calgary.

A group of passengers headed to Kelowna had quite the fright shortly after takeoff in Calgary, Saturday afternoon.

The WestJet flight 183, Calgary to Kelowna, was struck by lightning just minutes into the flight.

According to one of the passengers it sounded like a ‘cannon’ had gone off when the plane was hit.

“As safety is our top priority, a decision was made to return to Calgary for an aircraft inspection,” explains Lauren Stewart with WestJet.

A tipster told Castanet they had to remain on the tarmac for some time, due to the weather.

Stewart says with the storm still active in the area, guests had to remain onboard until it was safe to offload.

“Flights 183 (Calgary/ Kelowna) and 182 (Kelowna / Calgary) were subsequently cancelled and all guests were rebooked on several other flights last night and this morning,” says Stewart.
