Military won't double down

Canada isn't committing to the massive boost in military spending which presidential candidate Donald Trump is demanding of U.S. allies.

Canada's defence minister was asked during a visit to Washington about the candidate's call for NATO allies to meet international spending targets.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says the government's ongoing defence review will seek a policy that works for Canadians and for its co-operation with international allies.

Trump recently warned that allies should be prepared to defend themselves if they won't try meeting their agreed-upon goal of spending two per cent of GDP on defence.

Canada would need to double its military budget to reach that target.

Sajjan said contributions can be measured in other ways besides GDP, citing the 158 Canadians killed in the war in Afghanistan.
