Alberta premier sworn in

New Democrat Rachel Notley has been sworn in as Alberta's 17th premier, bringing to an official end nearly 44 years of Progressive Conservative rule in the province.

Notley took her oath on the steps of the legislature building in front of hundreds of people who stopped to watch on a warm, sunny day.

She will also hold the cabinet post of intergovernmental affairs.

Eleven other members of her cabinet were also sworn in.

Former Calgary alderman Joe Ceci is the new finance minister.

Former teacher and school administrator Margaret McCuaig-Boyd is the new minister of energy.

Former NDP leader Brian Mason is the new minister of infrastructure and transportation.

The NDP ousted the Tories from power by winning 54 of the 87 legislature seats in the May 5 election.
