Canada ranks poor for aid

Canada ranks near the bottom of the pack in the latest survey of the world's foreign aid spending.

The annual ranking by the Paris-based Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development says Canada's aid contributions dropped to 0.24 per cent of GDP in 2014, down from 0.27 per cent the previous year.

That's well below the United Nations target of 0.7 per cent of GDP, a goal that Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged all OECD countries to meet when he shared a podium with Prime Minister Stephen Harper last year in Toronto.

The aid agency Oxfam says the figure shows a lack of commitment by the Harper government to help reduce global poverty, saying the United Kingdom has exceeded the target for the last two years.

The OECD average was 0.29 per cent of GDP with 13 countries increasing their official development assistance spending last year, while 15 — including Canada — reported a decline.

There is no immediate comment from the office of International Development Minister Christian Paradis.
