Herd of caribou go on icy ride

A herd of caribou went on an unwelcome ride down an icy river in northern Canada, after the ice they were standing on broke free.

The video above, which is quickly going viral, shows the dozens of caribou stranded on the pieces of fast moving ice in the Porcupine River.

Dayna Lord shot the video in Old Crow, Yukon. It was posted to Facebook Wednesday evening.

"We've seen some run off the ice and we've seen another bunch of caribou jump off the ice and run up the bank," she said. "Yeah a lot of people feel bad, but it's just something that happens every year."

Caribou are heavy but fortunately have very large hooves that allow them to paddle through water, which means they have the ability to return to safety when the ice sheets melt.
