The man formerly accused in the double murder of an elderly Alberta couple is now filing a lawsuit for wrongful prosecution.
Travis Vader, 42, is suing 59 individuals involved in the case, including RCMP officers, crown prosecutors, jail guards, and jailhouse informants.
In the lawsuit, Vader alleges maltreatment by prison guards, RCMP misconduct and malicious prosecution.
He says police and the Crown were under pressure to find someone to charge for the murders of Lyle and Marie McCann. The couple, both in their 70s, were reported missing in July 2010.
They were last seen alive fuelling up their motorhome in St. Albert, a small community north of Edmonton. Police discovered the burnt remains of their vehicle, but never found their bodies.
Two years later, the RCMP charged Vader with two counts of first-degree murder.
During a pre-trial hearing in March, the Crown stayed the charges against Vader, meaning prosecutors have the option of reactivating the charges within one year if new evidence arises.
Vader remains in jail on charges unrelated to the McCann case.
