Canadians arrested in fire-bomb attack

Two Canadian women have been arrested in Mexico City in connection with a fire-bomb attack against a government department office.

Molotov cocktails were hurled at a Department of Communications and Transportation office Monday, damaging several vehicles outside a nearby car dealership, authorities told a news conference. No injuries were reported.

Prosecutor Rodolfo Ruis told local media that two Canadians and a Mexican national were arrested and that the Canadians were transferred into the custody of the Central Investigation Agency.

He says police are alleging that one of the two Canadians was spotted discarding a backpack containing a number of homemade explosive devices.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Officials with Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the detentions today.

"The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development is aware of two Canadian citizens currently detained in Mexico," said spokesman Mathieu Roy.

"Canadian officials are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and consular services are being provided."

Some banks in Mexico City have been hit in recent years by small incendiary devices. Those attacks have been attributed to small groups of leftists or animal rights activists.
