Rob Ford registers for 2014 election

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has put his name on the ballot for the city's 2014 municipal election in October.

Ford was the first candidate to show up at Toronto city hall to register when the nomination period opened Thursday.

Other possible high-profile contenders for the job include NDP MP Olivia Chow, former Ontario PC leader John Tory and councillors Karen Stintz and Denzil Minnan-Wong but none of them have yet filed nomination papers.

Ford has said he intends to win another four-year term as mayor, despite a rough year that saw him admit taking crack cocaine in a "drunken stupor" and make a crude sexual comment on live TV, among other incidents.

In November, city council voted to strip him of most of his powers.

Ford has steadfastly refused to take a leave or resign since reports surfaced in May of a video that appeared to show him smoking crack cocaine. Police said they had recovered the video but have refused to release it.

Nominations for the municipal election close on Sept. 12 and the election will be held Oct. 27.

Once nomination papers are filed, candidates are allowed to raise money and incur expenses for their campaigns.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story; a previous version put election date at Oct. 2.
