Canada’s top hockey players make most of Penticton campus fitness facility

Okanagan College Media Release

Womens hockey June 2013Twenty-seven of Canada’s top female hockey players have taken up part-time residence at Okanagan College’s fitness centre in Penticton.

Along with athletic trainers and coaches, the three goalies, nine defencemen and 15 forwards are spending the next few weeks of off-ice training at Okanagan College as part of their boot camp and centralized preparation for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi Russia.

The College gym, which is housed in the Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation, was built in 2011 and is equipped with a wide range of state-of-the-art fitness apparatus.

The players are sharing the facility with the gym’s regular users – students and staff of Okanagan College.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to host the players and coaches from Team Canada at our College,” said Regional Dean Donna Lomas. “It’s exciting for our staff and students to have athletes of this calibre on campus and it feels good to know that we can play a role, even if it is only a small one, in the team’s development.”
