Top scholars craft themselves new lives following graduation

Two top scholars are moving on and moving up at lightning speed
following their graduation this Thursday from two very different
vocational programs at Okanagan College.
Mark Kornell and Lindsey Davis both completed their programs with outstanding graduating averages.
The two are among 893 students who were recognized at Okanagan College's Summer Convocation ceremony that took place Thursday at the Kelowna campus.
Kornell graduated from the Studio Woodworking program with a 97.72 per cent average - the second highest grade average of full-time students enrolled the vocational program. He is receiving both the President's Award for Vocational Certificate programs and the $750 Vocational Health and Foundational Programs Graduate Scholarship.
Davis, who is receiving a President's Award for Diploma programs, graduated from the Therapist Assistant program with a 95.46 per cent average.
For Davis, receiving the award was bittersweet, as she couldn't attend the ceremony.
"I really wish I could be there to accept this award," she said.
With the ink barely dry on her diploma, Davis is already in her new job
working as a therapist assistant in a healthy living centre where she
completed two four-week practicums - outside Camrose, Alberta.
"I just moved out to Alberta fingers crossed and here I am in a
full-time job. I started my job on Monday," said Davis. "I think the
College's program is great and the instructors were amazing."
For Kornell, it's not so much about the move up, as the move on.
Kornell already holds a Bachelor of Science degree and an MBA. He spent
years working in corporate finance, and decided to take a different
career path after being diagnosed with throat cancer.
"It was time for me to reconsider things," he said.
Now he's preparing to open up his own custom-designed furniture studio
here in Kelowna.
Studio Woodworking and Therapist Assistant are among the more than 28
programs represented at Thursday's ceremony, including Certificates in
Interior Decorating, Landscape Horticulture and Medical Device
Reprocessing.
