College marks largest Spring Convocation in series of weekend ceremonies

Okanagan College is honouring more than 1,600 students who will earn credentials from a variety of academic, vocational and trades programs when graduands from all four campuses come together in a series of Convocation ceremonies in Kelowna.

“This weekend we will recognize our largest graduating class since the re-establishment of Okanagan College in 2005,” said president Jim Hamilton. “The class of 2012 is represented by a diverse group of students who have achieved a tremendous amount of success in their respective programs. We are extremely proud to celebrate those achievements this weekend.”
Trades students will be the first to receive their credentials on Friday at 6 p.m. The College will recognize the achievements of more than 1,200 entry level and apprenticeship students who completed their training over the past year.
On Saturday, Okanagan College will confer 494 credentials (172 bachelor’s degrees, 226 diplomas, 59 associate degrees, and 37 certificates) during another two ceremonies.
The first ceremony takes place at 10:30 a.m. for graduands from degree, diploma and certificate programs including Arts, Science, Engineering Technologies, Computer Science, Health and Social Development.
In the afternoon ceremony that begins at 1:30 p.m., the College will confer degrees, diplomas and certificates to graduates of the Okanagan School of Business.
The Saturday ceremonies will also recognize three distinguished community members as Honorary Fellows of the College.
Yasmin John-Thorpe, known for her literacy work in the South Okanagan, will be named an Honorary Fellow of the College at the morning ceremony, and retired College employee Catherine Williams will be granted a Distinguished Service Award for her contribution to health and safety.
Club Penguin co-founder Lane Merrifield will be named an Honorary Fellow in the afternoon.
The celebrations mark the beginning of a busy month for the College, which wraps up its Convocation season with another ceremony in Vernon on June 27, followed by the Summer Convocation in Kelowna on June 28.
At that time, the College will confer a further 349 credentials, and formally recognize this year’s third Honorary Fellow – Janet Shaw of Oliver, who is a long-time advocate for post-secondary education in British Columbia
