‘PROFIT, PEOPLE, PLANET’: PROVINCE FUNDING BUSINESS COMPETITION

On behalf of the BC Liberal Government Caucus

KELOWNA –The Okanagan School of Business’ Western Canadian International Business Competition is receiving $9,930 in funding, announced Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson, on behalf of the Ministry of Advanced Education.

Why this matters:
· The Western Canadian International Business Competition will be hosted by the Okanagan School of Business at Okanagan College from March 23-25, 2012.

· Undergraduate business students in Business Diploma and Degree programs from 10 post-secondary institutions across B.C., Alberta and one from Ontario will be competing.

· This year, the eleven teams of four students each are participating in two divisions: Sophomore Division [2nd year students] and Senior Division [3-4th year students].

Quotes:
"The Okanagan School of Business has a great program and the Business Competition is a big part of that. Students simulate nine years of running their companies, including financial performance and communications, but the overall measure is based on their three P’s – Profit, People and Planet. These students learn invaluable business skills, and also how to use them to benefit their community."

“Participation in competitions is fundamental for students becoming successful business people, just as much as for top athletes to compete. The experiences and the knowledge students gain; they bring back and share with others in their programs. Their coaches also make note of the areas where their programs and courses can be improved.  The net result is that competition builds better, stronger students who as professionals will definitely aid Canadian businesses competing in today’s global economy.”
-  Competition Coordinator and Marketing Professor Richard Appleby

Additional Info:
· The competition emphasizes the importance of both good strategic planning and implementation of the company’s strategy in a simulated competitive global economy.

· This year’s simulation has the students competing as teams of four: Marketer, Operations, Human Resource, and Finance.

· This is the 23rd annual competition hosted by Okanagan School of Business.
