Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,492.51, up 25.56 points):

Nexen Inc. (TSX:NXY). Oil and gas. Down 35 cents, or 1.32 per cent, at $26.07 on 9,283,632 shares.

Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK.B). Miner. Down $2.14, or 7.28 per cent, at $27.27 on 6,453,659 shares. Teck Resources said Wednesday it expects to weather any economic uncertainty after the mining company's second-quarter profit attributable to shareholders plunged to $268 million, hurt by weaker metal and coal prices during the quarter.

Progress Energy Resources Corp. (TSX:PRQ). Down two cents, or 0.1 per cent, at $20.06 on 5,229,686 shares.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up 31 cents, or 3.92 per cent, at $8.21 on 5,158,654 shares.

Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU). Oil and gas. Up $1.11, or 3.73 per cent, at $30.87 on 4,744,027 shares. Suncor, alongside joint-venture partner Total E&P Canada, is reviewing plans for the Fort Hills and Joslyn mines as well as the Voyageur oilsands upgrader.

Yellow Media Inc. (TSX:YLO). Directory publisher. Unchanged at 5.5 cents on 4,359,378 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,172.32 up 5.86 points):

Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSXV:PRY). Oil and gas. Up four cents, or 2.25 per cent, at $1.82 on 3,120,809 shares.

Canamex Resources Corp. (TSXV:CSQ). Miner. Down 1.5 cents, or 4.76 per cent, at 30 cents on 2,630,587 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Loblaw Companies Ltd. (TSX:L). Grocery chain. Down 47 cents, or 1.47 per cent, at $31.45 on 1,923,547 shares. Loblaws plans to unveil about 700 Joe Fresh stores in the U.S. next year as Canada's largest grocery chain works to ramp up sales of its hip fashion line to help bolster earnings that dropped by 19 per cent in its most recent quarter.

Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM). Consumer technology. Down 15 cents, or 2.12 per cent, at $6.93 on 1,798,779 shares. The New York Times announced that as of Monday it stopped supporting the NYTimes app for the BlackBerry as well as nixing its DealBook BlackBerry Reader platform.
