Coffee house a good omen for owners

Call it the ultimate good omen.

When Jamie Ohmenzetter and her partner Jason Embree were looking for a sign to help them choose the location for their new business, they never expected that sign to have family connections.

Both classically trained chefs, they dreamed of opening a specialty coffee house with unique food offerings and had been looking at potential locations throughout the Okanagan. Having grown up in Summerland, Jamie watched the Summerland area carefully, and when Coffee on Kelly went up for sale they knew it was the sign they were looking for.

Coffee on Kelly was the very location where Jamie's grandmother lived before it was converted into Coffee on Kelly.

"We knew we wanted to open our own coffee house, but it was a risk and a leap of faith for us to both leave our full time jobs to pursue our dreams", explains Ohmenzetter.

"When my grandmother's old house became available in Summerland, we both knew this was the sign... the good omen.... we had been looking for. We both really felt this was a sign of good things to come."

After 15 months of running Coffee on Kelly and an extensive renovation later, they renamed the business Good Omens.

The store offers roasted organic coffees and house-made light breakfasts and lunches.

The owners say longer term plans also include the launch of live outdoor music on the weekends and offering a selection of local wines and beer. More on this will follow in the summer.

Good Omens' official grand opening celebration party is happening on Saturday, February 20. They’ll be brewing free Good Omens coffee and goodies all day.

Good Omens is located at 13616 Kelly Avenue in Summerland.
