Toronto market holds gain

The Toronto Stock Exchange held on to a triple-digit gain Thursday morning even as U.S. markets dropped into the red.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 119.14 points at 15,332.74, extending a rally that began last week.

Major U.S. indexes were negative after starting the day with small gains. The Dow Jones industrial was down 38.07 points at 17,846.44, the Nasdaq fell 11.45 to to 4,939.37, and the S&P 500 declined 3.49 to 2,078.41.

The Canadian dollar was down 0.41 of a U.S. cent at 79.35 cents.

On the commodity markets, the May crude contract was up 41 cents at US$50.83 a barrel and the June gold contract fell $8 to US$1,195.10 an ounce.
