Markets open lower

North American stock markets were down Tuesday morning.

The S&P/TSX composite index dropped 5.37 to 14,903.02, but was up from its early lows.

Meanwhile, the loonie rebounded from an early loss to gain 0.11 of a U.S. cent at 78.89 cents.

The Canadian dollar improved after the release of Canadian gross domestic product data for January, which showed a smaller decline than economists had estimated.

On the commodity markets, the May crude oil contract was down 70 cents at US$47.98 a barrel, while the June gold bullion contract was up $1.90 at US$1,187.20 an ounce.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 52.15 points to 17,924.16, while the Nasdaq dropped 8.64 points to 4,938.80. The S&P 500 index lost 3.66 points to 2,082.58.
