Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurance. Down 31 cents, or 1.39 per cent, to $22.05 on 6.1 million shares. The company announced after markets closed Wednesday that it was buying the Canadian operations of Standard Life for $4 billion in cash.

Western Lithium USA Corp. (TSX:WLC). Miner. Down one cent, or 1.14 per cent, to 87 cents on 6.04 million shares.

Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TSX:TXG). Miner. Down 14 cents, or 7.95 per cent, to $1.62 on 5.1 million shares.

Carlisle Goldfields Ltd. (TSX:CGJ). Miner. Down one cent, or 25 per cent, to three cents on 4.7 million shares.

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Down 30 cents, or 3.43 per cent, to $8.45 on 3.7 million shares.

Artek Exploration Ltd. (TSX:RTK). Oil and gas. Up 11 cents, or 3.78 per cent, to $3.02 on 3.6 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Enbridge Inc. (TSX:ENB). Oil and gas. Down 25 cents, or 0.45 per cent, on 736,270 shares. The president of the Northern Gateway pipeline, John Carruthers, says it's unlikely the Enbridge pipeline project will start up in 2018. Carruthers says the company is focused on winning over B.C. First Nations groups, many of which remain adamantly opposed to the $7.9-billion project.
