Today on the Hill: Tories start the summer break with a flurry of announcements
OTTAWA - The spring session of Parliament may be wrapping up, but the government's not done making news — most notably on long-awaited reforms to the temporary foreign workers program.
Immigration Minister Chris Alexander and Employment Minister Jason Kenney will reveal the latest changes to the controversial program, which critics say employers have been abusing at the expense of job-seeking Canadians.
Public Works Minister Diane Finley also has an announcement today in support of Canadian innovation, job creation and economic growth.
And Alexander will reveal funding to help protect the rights and well-being of refugees and other displaced persons around the globe.
Here are some other events of interest today in Ottawa:
— Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz speaks via teleconference about his trade mission to China;
— Statistics Canada releases the inflation figures for May and retail trade figures for April;
— Gov. Gen. David Johnston presides over an Order of Military Merit investiture ceremony bestowing the honour on three commanders, 13 officers and 34 members;
— And members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers continue their conference looking at Canada Post's cutbacks from a human rights perspective. The conference wraps up on Sunday.
