Some facts about relations, trade and travel between Canada and Mexico
OTTAWA - Some facts about the trade and travel relationship between Canada and Mexico:
Trade: In 2012, Canada's exports to Mexico were $5.4 billion, with imports nearly $26.7 billion. Mexico imported almost $27 billion. Mexico is Canada's fifth largest export market and third biggest source of imports.
Travel: In 2012, Canadians made 1.6 million visits to Mexico and spent $748 million there; Mexicans made 132,000 trips to Canada and spent $196 million. British Columbia was the most popular Canadian destination with 39 per cent of all provincial visits, followed by Ontario at 27 per cent and Quebec at 22 per cent.
Relationship: 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of NAFTA and the 10th year of the Canada-Mexico Partnership.
Irritant: In 2009, Canada imposed a visa requirement on Mexicans seeking to visit Canada. The Canadian government said refugee claims from Mexico had almost tripled from 2005, making it the No. 1 country for such claims. In 2008, only 11 per cent of these claims were accepted by the refugee review process.
Quote: "Canada’s relations with the United States and Mexico are of the utmost importance for the long-term prosperity and security of all of our citizens. We look forward to further strengthening and deepening our ties with a view to creating jobs and economic growth in all three countries." — Prime Minister Stephen Harper
