4 workers injured in Regina refinery explosion in 2011 file lawsuit
REGINA - Four workers injured in an explosion at a Regina refinery are suing the company.
Kimberly Janvier, Irene Rombaut, Shawn Farrell and Sylvan Blake were working at the Co-Op refinery on Oct. 6, 2011 when the explosion occurred.
They say in their statement of claim that they all suffered severe physical injuries in the blast and they and their family members also suffered severe emotional distress and anxiety after the explosion.
The suit alleges that Federated Co-operatives Limited and Consumers Co-operative Refinery Limited or Co-op Refineries were negligent for failing to ensure the workplace was safe.
The statement of claim alleges that there were reports questioning the safety of pipes at the plant prior to the explosion and also alleges that one month before the blast electricians working at the site refused to go to work due to safety concerns.
The statement of claim contains allegations that are not yet proven in court.
A statement of defence has not been filed.
Two other companies named as defendants, Skyway Canada Limited and SkyHigh Canada, employed the four workers at the time of the explosion. The lawsuit alleges the companies held weekly safety meetings where concerns brought up by employees were disregarded.
