Grease-y fun in the park

“Summer lovin’ had me a blast!  Summer lovin’ happened so fast!”

This has been a summer of great excitement at New Vintage Theatre and all around the theatre community as we are experiencing the salad days of theatre in The Okanagan.

For theatre lovers, the offerings have been bountiful.

Whether you enjoyed our spectacular version of The Great Gatsby, saw Shakespeare Kelowna’s sold-out run of Romeo and Juliet, have tripped into see the highly acclaimed family favourite Mary Poppins by Kelowna Actors' Studio or are making the trip out to Caravan Farm Theatre to see Our Town (one of my favourite theatre companies in Canada), there are so many choices.

Later in August, Runaway Moon Puppet Theatre will be doing a show at Bumbershoot that is sure to be a hit as well.

There really is nothing like the feeling of being in an audience that is all in, when they love a show so much they leave full of joy.

Most of our shows strike a chord with audiences and we are lucky to see this on a regular basis, but there has been nothing like the feeling of being in the audience for the sold-out performances of Grease last week.

This talented, young cast truly knocked the bobby socks off their audience. Their talent coupled with first-class choreography/direction by Angela Quinn and music direction by Spencer Bach became lightning in a bottle.

There is a lot of love around for this musical all about summer love in the 1950s.

Break-out stars include Erik Chirkoff, Janel Filipiak, Kristian Oppenheim, Beamer Wigley, Antony Knight, Josie Morrow, Joelle Neufeld, Katie Dacre, Ashley Johnson, Jack Friesen and Emily Friesen.

There were also great character roles by Louise Boisvert, Andrew Zender, Jason Woodford and Graham Daley, fresh from starring in The Great Gatsby.

Thanks to the support of Festivals Kelowna, we are now bringing this hit outside for two afternoon shows on Sunday at City Park, and Aug. 21 at Gyro Beach, from 1-3 p.m.

The shows are free and perfect for all ages. At intermission, we will be giving away prizes for contests that have a ’50s flair and to those who dress up.

Don’t miss your chance to join us for these shows in the great outdoors. It is immersive theatre at its best, so bring your beach blanket and come out for the free fun.
