Specific Violations

Q: From time to time we hear that the RCMP will be cracking down on specific violations in specific areas. Most recently a crackdown Hwy 97 in Westbank and Kelowna. Included in the list of violations to be targeted are illegal headlights, window tinting and exhaust systems. While I don't recognize, illegal headlights and window tinting, I certainly hear extremely loud exhaust systems around Kelowna with great frequency. While the little import cars with the big can exhausts are annoying, I find that the big motorcycles with straight pipes actually cause pain with their ear splitting sound. With warmer weather coming the bikes are out again as I experienced yesterday on Harvey Ave while buying gas.
Q. Are these infractions normally ignored by the RCMP?
Q. Is it true that the RCMP are afraid of the bad boys who ride these illegal bikes and therefore leave them alone?

A: Vehicle infractions are indeed an enforceable offense. It may appear that there is a lack of enforcement for illegal vehicle modifications such as loud exhaust systems but time permitted, the police will do vehicle checks. One has to remember that a large portion of traffic police enforcement is for trying to eradicate aggressive driving behavior which is a major cause of vehicle crashes resulting in injuries and death on our roadways. Enforcement for illegal vehicle infractions is sometimes like fishing. Being in the right place at the right time always helps. I am aware of the rising problem of loud exhaust systems on certain motorcycles and vehicles. A future enforcement action for illegal vehicle modifications is being planned and I am hoping that it is soon. I hear your problem with loud exhaust systems and I certainly empathize with your position. Your problem has not fallen on deaf ears.
